Our Bow Wows in Need fall under two
categories---Dogs that are being treated for medical or behavioral
problems prior to being available for adoption, that we need extra
funds to help, or dogs that have a handicap or age related problem that
will require that "special someone" to give them a loving home. We also
have some resident Bow Wows, that have medical problems who will live
out their remaining days in the comfort of a loving foster home, and we
can always use extra funds to help care for these precious little ones
as well. These dogs are residents of Hazel House, our sanctuary.
Our mission at Little Bow Wow is to
take in dogs in need. All of the dogs in our rescue are considered our
"special babies", but some of them require a little something extra, which
also often means extra costs. Our adoption fees cover some of the costs
incurred in preparing a dog for adoption, but any additional medical
treatment is primarily covered by donations. We are a 501c(3), non profit
organization, so any donations are tax deductible. The adoption fee for
these dogs is not based on how much money is invested in their
rehabilitation, therefore we rely heavily on donations to help pay their
veterinary bills (our vet bills usually average several thousand dollars a
month).
Little Bow Wow is also a member of
the Adoption Partners program, run by the Orange County Animal Care
Center. As an adoption partner, we are often contacted when there is a
small dog
in need, that due to a medical or behavioral problem, cannot be
released to the public for adoption. The shelter simply does not have
the funds, nor the staff to deal with these special needs animals, so
they take that extra step and take the time to contact rescues all over
California to try and find placement for them. We have bought many
of these animals from the shelter and without a doubt, it is well worth
the extra time, effort, and money to save them. They have made wonderful
pets for the people who adopt them from us.
If you would like to make a donation
to help cover the cost of caring for these animals, please mail a check to Little Bow Wow
Rescue, P.O. Box 7065 Orange, California 92863. We would be happy to provide
you with a receipt for tax purposes at your request.
UNLESS OTHERWISE INDICATED, ALL
OF OUR BOW WOWS IN NEED ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION
N.
LITTLE BOW WOW WILL PAY FOR ANY ADDITIONAL MEDICAL CARE RELATED TO
ANY NON CHRONIC CONDITION
UNTIL PET IS RECOVERED, PROVIDED THAT THEY ARE TAKEN TO OUR
VETERINARIAN.

TEDDY
MAC is an extra special boy, who needs an extra special home.
Teddy has a charming personality that wins over everyone he meets
(how could anyone resist that cute little tongue!!
Teddy
is a 2 year old Chihuahua/Pug mix....his foster mom says he's a
"Chug".
Teddy has several issues
that are most likely the result of poor breeding. Of course we love
Teddy just the way he is - especially since none of his problems are
his fault (we can't pick our parents!)
Teddy Mac has luxating
patellas (slipping knee caps) that are common in both Chihuahuas and
Pugs. Our vet has examined his knees and feels that surgery may be
required, but first we are going to get Teddy on a good diet and
joint supplements to get him healthy. So far Teddy gets around fine
and is not in any apparent discomfort.
Teddy's endearing little tongue
that sticks out the side of his mouth is due to
a malaligned jaw. This also resulted in the shelter staff thinking that he
was much older than he truly is, because the malalignment has caused
him to lose teeth prematurely.
Teddy also is devoid of a tail.
Sometimes dogs and cats that are born without tails can have
neurological problems that cause them to have fecal incontinence and
unfortunately, Teddy's foster mom quickly discovered that Teddy Mac
does indeed have this problem. Basically, his "poop" just falls out
randomly. Teddy has no awareness of his problem, so he cannot be
reprimanded for having an accident in the house. Whoever adopts
Teddy Mac will have to accept that he will have poop accidents in
the house. He does NOT leak urine and has complete control over his
bladder.
Oh...he
does do one interesting thing to avoid standing on one leg too long,
when he urinates... Teddy frequently does a little handstand....
Isn't he just great!!?

KEEGAN is an 8 week old, male
Chihuahua mix. He came to us from our friends at the OC Shelter,
with a case of "Puppy Strangles". We have had a few of our babies
deal with this, most recently, our little Butterball. It causes the
lymph glands to become enlarged, and the puppy develops pustules on
their skin. (Poor little Keegan had one that ruptured which you may
notice on his back. It's almost completely healed now). The
treatment is relatively simple, and he is doing better every day! He
already feels pretty darn good! Good enough to enjoy some
rough housing with his foster brothers, who he seems to think are
pretty cool. (He's especially fond of Charlie and Jack!) We'll keep
his info updated as he progresses with his treatment.

Here is a newer photo of our little man. As you can see, one of his
ears has decided to stand up now. We're anxiously waiting to see
what the other ear decides! He is doing great with his treatment,
and is well on his way to a clean bill of health. His foster mom
thinks he just gets cuter everyday!

CARLY
is a female Chihuahua mix, just about 3 months old and weighs a
little over 3 lbs. She came to us from our friends at the OC Shelter
with a REALLY bad case of Demodectic mange, compounded by
bacterial skin infections. This type of mange is NOT CONTAGIOUS to
people or other pets, and responds well to treatment. She is pretty
uncomfortable now, but is still just about as sweet as she could
be!!! She likes other dogs, and LOVES people. It always amazes us
just how resilient these little ones are. It will take some time,
but our little Carly will be just fine, and will make a wonderful
addition to some one's family. We'll keep you updated on her
progress.
